| SC adjourns NRO pleas hearing till tomorrow |
Updated at: 1712 PST, Monday, December 14, 2009 ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan has adjourned the hearing of petitions against National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) till Tuesday.During the hearing the counsel of Federation Kamal Azfar said the democratic system is under CIA and GHQ threat. On this, the court directed him to submit his statement in writing. The Chief Justice in his remarks said the Law Secretary will be summoned for failing to apprise the court about the necessary details relating to the case. He said if the court’s decision is feared to trigger a November 3 like situation, the federation should inform the court about it in advance so that a stay order could be issued forthwith. At the outset of today’s hearing on the request of the Federation’s counsel Kamal Azfar, the Chief Justice Iftkhar Muhammad Chaudhry asked him as to what makes him feel that the democracy would be put under threat by the court’s decision. “If there is a fear of November 3 like situation, the court be informed at once so that a stay order could be issued.” He said the judiciary is here for the supremacy of democracy and law and that such allegations will not be tolerated. “All the judges present here have been part of the struggle for democracy.” The Chief Justice ordered Kamal Azfar to submit his statement in writing in today’s date. The court accepted the petition for making Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif party of the NRO case. |
