The government has faith that the court will deliver justice and there is no possibility of any clash with the judiciary: Gilani.
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani ruled out on Thursday a premature end to the PPP government, saying that the elements setting deadlines would be disappointed as the government would complete its five-year term.

In an interactive session with a group of journalists and anchorpersons, the prime minister said that conspiracies against any government could be hatched only if it did not enjoy the confidence of people. “And recent elections in Quetta and Gilgit-Baltistan proved that PPP enjoys support of the masses.”

Mr Gilani said the government respected the Supreme Court’s verdict on the National Reconciliation Ordinance and was waiting for its detailed judgment.

He said when the government decided not to defend the NRO it knew that cases would reopen. The government had faith that the court would deliver justice and there was no possibility of any clash with the judiciary, the prime minister added.

Mr Gilani disclosed that the decision to restore the Chief Justice had been taken by the government and rejected an impression that President Asif Ali Zardari had opposed the move. How could this decision have been taken if there was opposition from the president, he wondered.

In reply to a question, Mr Gilani said no one in the Constitutional Reforms Committee had objection to undoing the 17th Amendment and Article 58(2)B as well as the bar on becoming prime minister for a third time.

He said the opposition had some reservations over the draft accountability bill and that is why it had been sent to PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif to suggest amendments to be incorporated into the proposed law.

Mr Gilani said that the UN team investigating Benazir Bhutto’s assassination had been given one month’s extension to complete its job, expressing the hope that a report would be ready soon.

He said the military operation against terrorists was being carried out in the national interest and not under pressure, adding that the South Waziristan operation was progressing well.

The government believed in the freedom of media, he said, and offered apology for certain statements by some PPP representatives.

MILITARY ROLE
In an interview with a private TV channel, the prime minister said the military was playing its role in favour of democracy and supporting the political system. The military had to implement government’s policies, he added.
