| Military trial of civilians: Army Act Amendment rejected |
Updated at: 2000 PST, Wednesday, December 23, 2009 ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Defence, rejecting a Clause of the Army Act, which allows the court marshal of civilians, asked Barrister Aitzaz Ahsan to submit his legal opinion in writing. The defence committee met today at the Parliament House with Azar Afzal in the chair. Aitzaz Ahsan was specially invited to the meeting as a legal expert. Ahsan briefed the participants about the Army Act. Speaking to media after the meeting, Ahsan said all the participants of meeting had opposed the military trial of civilians. He said this Act should only be applicable on those civilians, who are found involved in acts of terrorism. The military courts should be set up through high courts, he said, adding that the superior courts should also not bypassed during this whole process. |
